Living with pain can have a big impact on your life and that's why I started this blog. My foot pain kept me from doing many things that I enjoy and I want to help others who are going through the same situation. As you browse through my blog, you'll learn about home treatments, medical procedures and new advancements in medicine that can help reduce pain. Pregnancy Headaches: What You Should Know

Claire Roberts

When you are pregnant, you can experience a myriad of symptoms that are surprising and frustrating for you to deal with. Among these are frequent and extremely painful headaches. Because you want to do this whole pregnancy thing right, you tend to avoid taking any over-the-counter medications if you can help it. This includes pain medications that could help treat and rid you of your headaches. Luckily, there are ways that you can handle your pregnancy headaches using methods that do not include the use of over-the-counter pain medications. All you need to do is learn what methods to use and changes to make in your routine to rid yourself of those pregnancy headaches.

Change Your Eating And Sleeping Habits

Rather than treat your headache symptoms as they arise, it may be prudent for you to change your daily habits that could be causing your perpetual headaches. First and foremost, make sure you are getting enough rest every day.

When you are pregnant, you need more rest than you normally would in your daily life. Rather than try to soldier on as you always have, be sure you take the time to rest. This may mean taking a nap during the day or going to bed earlier.

Additionally, food sensitivities may be causing your headaches. Food additives such as MSG, artificial colorings and sweeteners, or nitrates in what you eat can cause frequent headaches. Try to eat a diet of fresh, unprocessed foods to help remedy such problems.

Give Acupuncture A Try

The stress and strain on your body from pregnancy can result in a lot of tension that you carry with you in your muscles and nerves. This tension can cause headaches.

To help remedy this problem, you can try going to an acupuncturist. Acupuncture is a treatment that uses tiny needles in specific pressure points throughout the body to stimulate the proper flow of energy throughout the body. In other words, when there is a blockage in your body, acupuncture is designed to help remedy it and remove it.

For your pregnancy headaches, the pressure points will be located on your forehead and face as well as on your hands, maybe even on your feet. The entire body is interconnected according to acupuncturists and these points on your feet and hands directly affect your head.

Stay Hydrated

When you are pregnant, dehydration is a common problem you need to watch out for.  Because a large amount of blood in your body needs to go to the uterus to support your growing baby, the rest of your body can easily suffer if you do not take the necessary steps to care for yourself.

This means that you will need to drink more water on a daily basis than you did before you were pregnant. A minimum of 8 glasses a day is ideal during pregnancy. So, if you start to feel a headache coming on, drink a nice tall glass of water and you may just preemptively stop your next headache.

While pregnancy headaches in the first trimester are painful and frustrating, they do not have to go on unchecked. Give these simple remedies a try and you may find yourself relieved of your head pain and discomfort in no time. If your headaches persist or become unbearable, head to your ob/gyn or a walk-in clinic, such as West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center, to ensure that you do not have an emergent problem.
