4 Differences Between Birth Control Pills And Shots

Claire Roberts

If you are looking for an effective birth control method that is not permanent, your two main choices will be using birth control pills or getting birth control shots. Before you decide which one to use, you may want to look at the key differences in these two common options. Here are several of the main differences you should consider as you make your choice.

Frequency

The first difference with these options is the frequency in which you will have to do something. With birth control pills, you will be required to take a pill each day. This requires a lot of discipline and responsibility, which is one of the reasons many women choose the shot instead.

With birth control shots, you will have to visit your doctor every 12 weeks to get one injection. This is approximately every three months, which means you will only have to take action four times each year to be protected against pregnancy.

Method

A second difference involves the way the birth control is administered. If you are a person who absolutely hates getting shots, the birth control shot option might not sound very good to you. After all, you will have to get shots regularly with this option. Birth control pills, on the other hand, are taken orally. This may be easier for some people to handle, yet others may not mind getting shots a few times each year.

Side Effects

Women who take birth control pills may experience several different side effects. These can include bleeding between cycles, nausea, weight gain, moodiness, and sore breasts. Women who receive birth control shots may experience the same symptoms as this; however, they may also experience irritation at the site of the injections.

Effectiveness

Birth control pills are extremely effective when taken each day at the same time. With these pills, there is only a 0.1% chance that you will become pregnant. According to WebMD, birth control shots are 99% effective when used as scheduled. Both options are considered methods that are highly effective for stopping pregnancy, but neither of these methods protects against sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs). If you would like protection for this, you will have to look into additional options.

Taking action to prevent an unplanned pregnancy is the responsible thing to do as a woman if you are sexually active.
