3 Things You Shouldn't Do The Night Before Mohs Surgery

Claire Roberts

Mohs surgery is a common and highly effective form of surgery for skin cancer patients. Although you are probably looking forward to having surgery done so that you can get better, you are probably feeling pretty nervous about the whole thing. Luckily, proper preparation can help. Along with listening to any instructions that you might have been given by your physician, make sure that you avoid these things the night before your procedure. If you do, you can help ensure success.

1. Drink Alcoholic Beverages

Although you might want to have a drink or two to calm your nerves the night before your procedure, it's best to abstain from alcohol use for a couple of days before your surgery. Even though alcohol can help calm your nerves a little bit, it can also cause your blood to become thinner. This can lead to you bleeding much more than normal during your surgery, which can obviously cause complications. If you are feeling nervous about your procedure, consider asking your doctor for a mild sedative, or look for other ways to calm down, such as taking a hot bath or sipping on a cup of tea.

2. Fast

Before many procedures, you are expected to fast for a certain number of hours before your surgery. This generally is not the case with Mohs surgery. Since you could be at the doctor's office or hospital for several hours, it's actually best to enjoy a good, healthy meal the night before and the morning of your procedure. This is general advice; if your physician does tell you to fast, then you should obviously take his or her advice. In most cases, however, it isn't necessary to do so.

3. Take All of Your Medications

If you are on a lot of medication, make sure that you wait before you take all of your pills. A few days before your surgery, show your doctor a list of all of the medications that you take. He or she will tell you to avoid taking certain medications that might interact with the local anesthesia or that might cause you to bleed more heavily than usual. Before abstaining from important medication, make sure that you talk to your primary care physician as well.

Avoiding a few things before Mohs surgery can help things go as smoothly and well as possible. These are three things that you shouldn't do if you are scheduled to have this procedure done to help you with your skin cancer.
