Why an Exam Is Important Before a Chiropractic Adjustment

Claire Roberts

While getting a chiropractic treatment is a great idea for any patient, one of the most common mistakes that patients make is not receiving a full evaluation before they go in for chiropractic care. While going in for an adjustment is not a bad idea, the patient should understand his or her body beforehand.

The Importance of an Examination

Make sure that the patient's spine and nervous system are checked out completely before having a chiropractic adjustment. This is an evaluation that is performed by a chiropractor and is one of the most thorough evaluations of this part of the body.

Tests Available

There are many techniques the patient can expect to be used as his or her body is examined. For example, the patient may receive a surface electromyography. With this examination, the electrical activity of groups of muscles is studied to determine if they are in a healthy state. This is performed both while the muscles are at rest and when they are active.

Another important thing to examine is the patient's weight and balance distribution. This is used to determine the patient's overall health and can help the patient walk in a manner that doesn't place as much strain on their spine.

Computerized thermography is another test and will monitor the temperature and changes in the patient's blood vessels. Blood vessels will often change as a result of health problems, such as the development of breast cancer.

The patient's posture plays a role in nervous system functioning. However, simply having a chiropractor examine the posture might not be enough. The patient might need a computerized posture analysis to understand the current state of the posture and what changes can be made both to improve the patient's appearance and overall health.

After Performing Tests

There are several other tests that can be performed by a chiropractor prior to performing other treatments, such as a chiropractic adjustment. Then, the chiropractor should discuss the results with his or her patient and provide him or her with a written review of the results. The patient can make the best possible decision for his or her well-being. After an adjustment, the patient will do the following:

  • Sleep better
  • Experience less pain
  • Have fewer headaches
  • Have better blood pressure

Therefore, it's important for a chiropractor to know when it is safe to go ahead with an adjustment.
